2023 Mercedes C-Class release date

Following its redesign last year, the C-class sedan gets the AMG treatment for 2023. The new C43 four-door trades its predecessor’s 385-hp twin-turbo V-6 for a 402-hp turbo 2.0-liter four. Its 48-volt hybrid system powers a 13-hp starter-generator and an electric motor within the turbo, which combats lag. The upcoming C63, which is a 2024 model, trades its V-8 for a 671-hp plug-in-hybrid version of this powertrain. The previous-gen coupe and convertible live on as the Benz-badged C300 and AMG-fettled C43 and C63.

The GLC-class is freshly redesigned for 2023. For now, it comes strictly as a 255-hp four-cylinder GLC300, though a more powerful AMG variant and a plug-in-hybrid powertrain are also due to join the lineup.

The fastback GLC Coupe is as yet untouched by the redesign, though a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is now standard across the line.

On the electric front, the new EQB now marks Benz’s entry point for EVs. It comes with a 66.5-kWh battery and 225 horsepower at the 300 4Matic level or 288 horses in the 350 4Matic. The EQB250+ is the least powerful (188 horses) but has the longest range. A trio of new models rounds out the growing lineup of EVs: the EQE sedan, EQE SUV, and EQS SUV.

Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV

Mercedes-Benz

While Mercedes has revealed little about the EQE SUV, we know more about the new EQS SUV. Like the flagship EQS hatchback, the SUV has a 107.8-kWh battery and comes in rear-drive 355-hp EQS450+ and all-wheel-drive EQS450 4Matic guise, as well as in 536-hp EQS580 4Matic form. A third row of seats is optional. Sportier AMG and ultra-luxe Maybach models are sure to come.

The Metris van sunsets after 2023, but the bigger Sprinter gets a number of mechanical revisions, including a new turbo-diesel four-cylinder in 168-hp and 208-hp states of tune. They replace last year’s less powerful four- and six-cylinder diesels. The 188-hp gas-fed turbo four sticks around. A nine-speed automatic transmission steps in for the old seven-speed unit. Rear-drive remains standard, but a new all-wheel-drive system capable of splitting torque evenly between the axles replaces last year’s rear-biased setup.

This year also is the last for the E-class’s 603-hp E63 S sedan and wagon; the noir-inspired, matte-gray E63 S Final Edition marks the occasion.

In G-class news: A 585-hp twin-turbo V-8 powers the G63 4x4². Like the G550 4x4² before it, this model sports flared fenders, a light bar, and a set of portal axles that add more than four inches of ground clearance.

Changes to the rest of Mercedes’s extensive model line are minimal, with the CLA-class, GLA-class, and GLB-class carrying over unchanged. The CLS-class, GLE-class, GLS-class, S-class, SL-class, and GT 4-Door all receive minor adjustments to color palettes and trim and feature content. The 800-plus-hp GT 4-Door hybrid is still a year away, and the two-door GT is dead, but we expect it to return as a hardtop companion to the SL droptop. Lastly, the long-delayed, F1-inspired, 1000-plus-hp AMG One supercar will finally be delivered to overseas customers in late 2022.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan is the German automaker’s esteemed compact luxury car. A benchmark in its segment, the C-Class has an enviable history of letting fellow up-and-coming executives know you’re one rung higher on the ladder. Pricing starts at $44,850.

Yes, even as corporate climbers flock to SUVs, there is still a place for sedans, especially luxury ones. And few play that role better than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Mercedes’ compact luxury sedan remains fresh as a spring day thanks to a complete update last year that brought new technology, an improved engine, and the latest safety tech in the brand’s arsenal. This year brings what the all-new model lacked: The option for more firepower.

That comes thanks to the new Mercedes-AMG C 43, which packs more than 400 horsepower and enables the C-Class range to further its long rivalry with the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, not to mention other worthy contenders like the Genesis G70, Lexus IS, and Acura TLX. The C-Class also remains available as a coupe and cabriolet, but they are carryover models still using the prior generation’s platform. Here we review the sedan, which comprises a vast majority of C-Class sales.

In reality, it would be hard to go wrong with any of C-Class’ rivals, but the Mercedes is the only one that can claim this: It is the royal progeny of the company that actually invented the automobile.

2023 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Pricing

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz C-Class starts at $44,850. Opting for Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel drive is an additional $2,000. We expect the new Mercedes-AMG C 43 to start in the low-$60,000 range.

The C-Class is priced a bit higher than its rivals. The BMW 3 Series and Infiniti Q50 start a couple of thousand lower, while the Audi A4, Lexus IS, Genesis G70, Acura TLX, and Volvo S60 are a bit beneath that.

  • C 300 sedan: $44,850
  • C 300 4Matic sedan: $46,850
  • AMG C 43 sedan: Est. around $60K

These are the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) and don’t include the $1,050 factory-to-dealer delivery fee.

Before buying, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are really paying. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is expected to hold its value well.

What’s New for 2023?

The big news for 2023 is the Mercedes-AMG C 43 performance sedan joining the lineup. The C 300 sedan, which was all-new for the 2022 model year, carries over.

Driving the 2023 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Quick off the line, nimble in the city, and as at home on busy Southern California freeways as it is barreling down a German autobahn. We’ve tested the C-Class in all these locales and instances — and have come away impressed every time. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class does almost everything right.

Most buyers will be happy enough with the C 300 model powered by a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that is now even smoother and punchier thanks to a mild-hybrid system. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is the invigorating de facto setup, but Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is always a good option if you deal with slick, wintry roads and want enhanced traction.

If you’re the kind of driver who craves power as much as you do a premium experience, turn your attention to the new Mercedes-AMG C 43 model. This latest version now packs over 400 horsepower from its hand-built engine and the ability to launch from 0-60 mph in a mere 4.6 seconds.

Regardless of powertrain choice, we appreciate the C-Class’ ability to match the mood of the driver with a flick of a switch. Comfort, Sport, Eco, or some drive mode in between? This little Benz will oblige. One area where we found room for improvement is brake feel. In the latest C 300 we tested, the pedal felt soft initially, though ultimately performed its job.

We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and researching the current collection of compact luxury cars, including this Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Rich, Stylish, High-Tech Interior

It may be the “baby Benz,” but the C-Class sedan mimics Mercedes’ flagship S-Class. That’s been the case for years now and remains true for this latest generation. And who wouldn’t want the feel of a $100,000-plus car in one costing less than half that price?

Familial traits include a big, tablet-like 11.9-inch touchscreen that acts as a focal point in the center of the cabin, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and even air vents and speaker grates that look expensive. Plus, a biometric identification system will set an individual’s preferences with the touch of a finger.

All in all, we found the C-Class a comfortable place to be. We felt cocooned in the driver’s seat and not too cramped in the rear.

Know that due to a lack of physical dials and buttons, many functions necessitate a touch, sometimes a very gentle one, such as two tiny pads on the steering wheel. Too hard of a press on the volume slider of the touchscreen made us nervous with the way it briefly concaved, and some of the more out-of-the-way materials felt like un-Mercedes-like hard plastic.

Upds

The interior of the C-Class sedan isn’t the only place where it mimics its bigger and more expensive S-Class sibling. The exterior, too, wears a svelte and sweeping design. Appropriate for its audience, however, the C-Class has more of a youthful flair. Think name-brand athleisure wear vs. a three-piece suit.

The C-Class is fresh off an update, so its design still looks new yet familiar. We appreciate that Mercedes offers candy-like colors such as blue metallic and a deep red in addition to the slate of blacks and grays.

Favorite Features

11.9-inch touchscreen
The C-Class’ standard tablet-like touchscreen conveys everything from navigation and climate info to smartphone functions, all in crisp detail.

Burmester audio
This system by high-end German audio brand Burmester remains among the best we’ve heard in a vehicle. Whether you’re an audio snob or just love driving to music, having this system can make every mile more enjoyable. It becomes standard on the mid-tier Exclusive trim.

AMG C 43 model
Mercedes’ AMG 43 models have long been a Goldilocks between the base version and the no-holds-barred 63 models. All-new for 2023, the AMG 43 C-Class sedan now packs over 400 horsepower.

Interior color choices
A surprising array of upholstery colors are available, including red and various shades of brown.

Driver Assistance Package
It’s a shame this isn’t standard, but we recommend this option that’s available on the Exclusive and Pinnacle trims. It bundles features like Distronic adaptive cruise control, Evasive Steering Assist, and Active Blind Spot Assist. It’s well worth the $1,700 price.

Augmented video
Even with today’s easier-to-use navigation systems, it’s all too easy to miss a turn. This feature, standard on the Pinnacle trim, helps make sure you never do by overlaying digital graphics such as big turn arrows on the navigation display exactly as you approach a street.

Engine & Transmission

The 2023 Mercedes C 300 sedan is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This is about average for the segment and enables both peppy acceleration and good efficiency. The powertrain also benefits from a mild-hybrid system that further helps on both counts.

Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is the standard setup, while all-wheel drive (AWD), which Mercedes calls 4Matic, is optional.

The new Mercedes-AMG C 43 sedan uses a new, hand-crafted engine of the same displacement that makes an impressive 402 horsepower and comes standard with 4Matic AWD.

KBB Vehicle Review and Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.
