The 2023 BMW X3 is here with no exterior design changes as it received a styling refresh just last year. The 2023 BMW X3 price starts at $45,400 and an additional $995 is levied as destination fee. BMW also offers keyless proximity keyless entry as standard across the entire trim lineup. The 2023 BMW xDrive30i and sDrive30i gets a new Skyscraper Gray Metallic exterior paint. However, there has been a deletion of gesture controls from the available Premium Package.

The standard model of the 2023 BMW X3 will be available in a single trim, which is the 30i and can be opted either with a sDrive rear-wheel-drive configuration or an xDrive all-wheel-drive configuration. Both setups would share a common 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 motor which is coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Both drive train configurations are rated for similar straight performance, but the xDrive has been rated to consume more fuel if you are concerned about that specific aspect, even though the fuel tank sizes remain the same.

Coming to equipment, the 2023 BMW X3 has been loaded pretty nice for its segment, and can’t stop but praise BMW for including an Active blind-spot detection system as a part of the standard safety suite. Apart from that, the insides of the 2023 BMW X3 will greet you with two full-size screens for the infotainment and driver instrument cluster, a sport 3-spoke steering wheel, and a powered driver seat with memory functions [no standard heating function, unfortunately]. The seats are finished in SensaTec upholstery, with an anthracite headliner and contrasting dark Oakwood cabin inserts. You also get multi-zone climate control and fancy ambient lighting. As for the exterior, powered mirrors, full LED headlamps, 19-inch wheels, an active kidney grille, and a hands-free tailgate are the most noticeable features.

Apart from the standard equipment mentioned above, BMW also offers a bunch of optional packages on the 2023 BMW X3. To start with you get the exterior design M Sport package for $4,100, a premium package that includes a sunroof for $1,000, a Dynamic handling package for $1,400, and a Shadowline exterior package for $400.

The base sDrive 40i trim should be sufficient for the vast majority and also feels like the more fun-to-drive vehicle compared to the xDrive trim, which also is less fuel efficient. As for the options, we would go for the Shadowline exterior package that adds a bit of sportiness and also the premium package that adds front heated seats, steering wheel, panoramic glass moon roof, and power driver seat lumbar adjustments

Release Date

Given that we have been seeing a lot of spy shots of the hotter X3M flying around circuits, we expect BMW to drop in the regular variants at the start of fall. Deliveries should also follow close given that the SUV has not undergone any major changes.

Engine and Performance

Though the 2023 BMW X3 in the 30i trim is actually made to be more of a family-friendly compact, it is pretty much super quick on its feet, probably more than what your neighborhood Karen, who generally buys one of these, would even ask for. The tiny turbo-4 churns about 248hp and 258 lb-ft. of torque from RPMs as low as 1,500, making it surprisingly poky off the line. BMW says that it can do a 0-60mph run in a flat 6 seconds and we believe them. The quarter-mile comes up in just under 15 seconds and the top speed is limited to 130mph if anyone’s interested in these figures.

Coming to general use, the motor feels more than adequate. The 8-speed ZF transmission finds its way around pretty nice no matter the speed, the kick down feels decently quick for the segment. You also have some nice metal-finished paddle shifters should you decide to take control. Highway cursing is rather effortless and the engine feels more refined than some big V6 units we have seen in this segment at comparable paces. The engine never felt like it run out of air thanks to the efficient gearbox and there is lots of juice on offer at any given moment. The tow rating stands at around 4,400 pounds which is pretty high for this class of SUVs.

Although the Mercedes GLC 300 is the SUV with the best figures on paper here, it slightly falls back to the BMW X3 owing to the slightly long geared G-Tronic transmission. However, it gains background in the quarter-mile runs posting the shortest time of 14.8 seconds, given its higher torque figure and low curb weight. The Volvo XC60 on the other hand, despite putting out the same power as the BMW and weighing less, only manages to hit 60 in 6.6 seconds given its lazy transmission setup. The Audi Q5, with the least powerful base engine and high curb weight, comes out as the slowest with a 0-60 mile timing of over 6.8 seconds.

2023 BMW X3 Ride and Handling 

The 2023 BMW X3, as always, strikes the best amalgamation of agility and comfort. Given that it is one of the smallest SUVs that BMW rolls out, it shouldn’t be surprising to hear this. The compact dimensions make it real ‘darty’ and you almost feel driving around in a hatchback, minus the ride height. The steering, though not the most responsive unit out there by BMW standards, still feels confidence-inspiring. The nose is pointy and there is a bit of playfulness from the rear if you have the sDrive configuration. The xDrive trim is also similarly enjoyable but lacks the slight playfulness of the RWD setup. However, if you reside in a place with bad winters, the xDrive would be the one to go for without a doubt. The overall ride quality is also pretty good. It might not be GLC level pliant but does keep most of the undulations from being felt in the cabin. You do get sporty dampers and variable-ratio steering with the Dynamic handling package, but if we were the ones to pick, we would opt out of that for better daily usability and comfort.

BMW usually offers the best braking performance be it any class it competes in. the same goes for the 2023 BMW X3 as well. Though the 13-inch cast iron rotors at all four corners might seem a bit underwhelming, these are enough to bring this 4080-pound SUV to a complete halt in just 109ft. The bite feels adequate and there is enough feel from the brake to judge the braking distances, even on emergency braking from highway speeds. The SUV feels super stable and apart from the nose dive, it stays in its line. In addition, you get equipment like auto emergency braking and forward collision braking as standard, which should further improve the overall experience.

The 2023 BMW X3, despite being one of the heavier SUVs here, manages to stop the quickest. The Mercedes Benz GLC 300 on the other hand, with one of the class-biggest hardware and low curb weight, comes pretty close, registering a complete stop in just 110 feet. Both the Audi Q5 and the Volvo XC60 have some decent-sized hardware on offer, so we expect them to perform similarly and post a figure that is under 115 feet as their predecessors, which is a pretty acceptable figure for this class.

Fuel Economy

Fuel economy is a prime factor in this segment and we are happy to say that the 2023 BMW X3 covers that aspect rather well. With an EPA-rated combined efficiency of around 25mpg and a highway efficiency of close to 30mpg, the X3 is one compact SUV that could be tagged frugal. But the fly in the ointment here is the small 17.2-gallon fuel tank which is one of the smallest we have come across in this class. Even though the individual economy figures look impressive, the small tank prevents it from hitting the magic 500-mile range, which we think is a real bummer.

The Volvo XC60 offers the best fuel economy in combined and highway driving cycles. This coupled with the fact that it gets the biggest-in-class fuel tank, helps this compact squeeze out an excellent highway range of over 560 miles, which is the best in class. The Audi Q5, sporting the least powered engine, unsurprisingly gets economies similar to the BMW X3 but pulls ahead in rate, thanks to its bigger 18.5-gallon fuel tank. Churning out the most power and torque, the tiny 4-pot on the Mercedes Benz GLC 300 is a bit thirsty compared to most SUVs in this class. This along with the small fuel tank makes it the least performing SUV in this department.

Interior

BMW just gave the interiors of the X3 a major uplift with the previous model year and has brought it up in times with the layout that we have been seeing on many high-end cars from their line-up. This means that the decade-old design has been ditched for a newer, cleaner, and functional layout that we have been loving in their new and updated cars. You get a fully digital instrument cluster and the 10.25-inch updated iDrive system standard now. There is a decent use of brushed metal elements and dark Oakwood inserts in the cabin that certainly helps uplift the overall premium vibe. However, the lower part of the dashboard, center console, and the doors have scratchy plastic that has gone through a cost cut, but we don’t know if we should be complaining.

Talking about comfort, the seats themselves are nicely contoured and accommodating. SensaTec upholstery comes in standard while the sports steering and the door armrests get nice leather wrapping. The front seats get power adjustability and the driver side gets memory function, but front row heating only comes in as a part of the premium package which is surprising at this price. The second row, though comfortable lacks legroom and we would advise you to equip the optional power moonroof to bring in a sense of airiness to the second-row occupants. However, you do get separate climate control buttons and two USB C’s for added convenience. The compromise in rear legroom has however helped excavate a rather generous 28.7 cu-ft. of cargo area, which from our test can pack in most of the stuff you would want to carry on board a weekend trip. The rear seats fold down in 60:40 splits and the SUV makes way for a massive void of about 63 cu-ft.

The Volvo XC60 is the SUV that offers maximum cabin room for the class. However, this comes as a missive compromise in the cargo room as it measures a measly 17.8 cu-ft. The Audi Q5 and the Mercedes GLC 300 have similar cabin rooms on offer, but the former gets slightly better rear legroom and also gets a slightly larger trunk that measures 25.9 cu-ft. The 2023 BMW X3 on the other hand, as mentioned, gets the biggest cargo area in exchange for limited second-row legroom.

How intuitive is the 2023 BMW X3’s infotainment system?

As already mentioned, the 2023 BMW X3 gets the updated iDrive 7.0 infotainment system that was brought in with the LCI update last year. The user interface has been made leaps better than the one it replaces and the system is also capable of over-the-air updates. However, we have to say that the system still does not feel as intuitive as some of its competitors here and has lots of sub menus and diagnostic/service functions that can get confusing real quick. That said, the system does now support Android Auto and Apple Carplay out of the box so you won’t have to bother with BMW’s proprietary software. Other standard features include enhanced Bluetooth connectivity, navigation with real-time traffic, and a 15-speaker 205-watt Hifi audio system. Though we are delighted with the new system here, BMW is yet to come far in making an intuitive interface.

Exterior

The 2023 BMW X3 is a carbon copy of the model year it replaces. BMW, having given it a significant facelift with the LCI model in 2022, we don’t expect them to bring in any differentiation for 2023, which they haven’t. It means that you get to keep that regular-sized kidney grille for one more year, which also incorporates the fancy flaps for switching between active cooling and better aerodynamics. The headlights have gotten sleeker with the update and now get the sharper half-hexagonal corona lights which are programmable. The X3 gets full LED exterior lighting and the headlamps get an auto-high beam function. Other notable features include a 19-inch Y-spoke painted alloy wheel, power-heated side mirrors with auto tilt down function, rain-sensing wipers, rear defogger, and keyless entry with courtesy lights and a power tailgate. The Mercedes Benz GLC 300, though comes in as the smallest SUV in this comparison, gets the longest wheelbase here. The small size also helps it weigh the least as well. The BMW X3 and the Audi Q5 on the other hand weigh identical and are also the heftiest of the bunch. The X3 however, gets an advantage of size and wheelbase over the Q5, which should come in favor of usable cabin space. The Volvo XC60 has an identical wheelbase as the 2023 BMW X3, gets the best compromise of legroom on each row, but gets the worst trunk space in the comparison.

The 2023 BMW X3 also follows suit and gets equipped with amenities like Auto emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, dynamic cruise control, and even blindspot detection as standard over the already impressive array of passive systems. In addition, the 2022 X3, to which the current model year is identical to, has been awarded a ‘5-star’ rating by the NHTSA and an overall ‘Good’ rating by the IIHS for acing their crash safety tests. So it is safe to conclude that the safety department on the 2023 BMW X3 is the least concerning aspect of this SUV.

The Audi Q5 has been one of the most favorable SUVs in the midsize luxury segment at a point in time, boasting some exciting fusion of tech, luxury, and performance. But in recent times, Audi, like its elder brother the Q7, has messed with whit what we think was the essential sole of the SUV. Now, apart from the physical dimensions, the Q5 finds it hard to march the BMW be it in performance, fuel economy or the kind of tech injected into each trim. The base 2.0L engine that the Q5 houses isn’t up to the mark and robs the overall experience of the SUV, something which it only had little to offer to start with. Given the fact that the Q5 is also the only Audi to rock the old-generation cabin, does little to help it stand out over the BMW.

The Volvo XC60, in comparison to some of its competitors here, it’s really starting to show its age. Though we love this SUV back in the day for its tech and excellent safety, competition has caught up pretty quick, living this midsize luxury SUV from Volvo with not too many attractive aspects to make it stand out from the crowd. In the company of the BMW X3, it misses out on performance, design, practicality, and fun nature in a big way. The only trait where it outshines the BMW is in economy number thanks to the higher EPA-rated figures and fuel tank size. But does that fact also make it the better choice than the BMW X3? Well, we don’t think so and Volvo needs to up their game here rather than spending more resources on the safety department.

2023 BMW X3 vs 2022 Mercedes GLC Class

The Mercedes Benz GLC might be one of the latest additions to this segment and undeniably the poshest feeling SUV of the bunch as well. When compared to the BMW X3, it also has a higher output engine and gets the longest wheelbase which helps in boosting cabin legroom. However, the X3 hits back with its agile chassis, peppier motor, and better economy numbers. Even though the X3 has slightly more appeal than the GLC 300 as the sportier and better overall balanced package, if you are looking for build quality and fine luxury, it is pretty much hard to beat the Merc. The lower starting prices are also something that works in the favour of the GLC 300. So, picking a winner is a bit hard here and the choice should boil down to brand preferences and requirements.
