As many as 20 national teams will reportedly take part in the 2024 T20 World Cup that will be jointly hosted by the Cricket West Indies [CWI] and USA Cricket.
The ICC announced the list of tournaments and the nations that will host them, from a seven-year period ranging from 2024 to 2031. The 2024 tournament will see an expansion of teams from 12 to 20, a rise that was welcomed in the cricketing fraternity.
These 20 teams will be playing in four different groups in a 55-match June 2024 tournament. The two boards have made a joint statement regarding the same, also revealing that CWI will host 35 matches while the remaining 20 will be held in the USA.
T20 World Cup 2024 ideal showcase for including cricket in Olympics – USA Cricket
The ICC is working on the possibility of including Cricket in the 2028 Olympics that will be held in Los Angeles. The expansion of the number of teams to 20 will help to spread more awareness about the sport and giving the USA the right to hold a part of the T20 World Cup 2024 matches will help them prepare if the Olympics does end up harboring the sport.
“The ICC has identified the USA as a strategic market for growth that will benefit cricket around the world. A major event in 2024 will be the critical catalyst to improve facilities, develop a professional league, grow the fanbase and inspire public and corporate support.“
“Bringing 20 different nations together for the first time in what will be the biggest T20 World Cup of all time in 2024 is also the ideal showcase for the prospects of including cricket in the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 and leaving a legacy of facilities and public enthusiasm for the sport across America ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles,” USA Cricket head Parag Matathe stated.
It’s the first time that a major ICC tournament will be held in the USA. As of now, five American and thirteen West Indian venues have been approved by the ICC for the World Cup.
