Spotify Mixes are a new family of personalized playlists populated with songs you already like and then supplemented with additional songs Spotify thinks youll like, based upon your favorite artists, genres, or music decades. The new Mixes are rolling out globally starting today for both free and premium Spotify subscribers.

The music streaming service already offers a similar feature in the form of Daily Mixes, which appear in the same Made for You section. However, the problem with Daily Mixes is that it can be a little hard to work out the unifying theme of each playlist based on their vague names like Daily Mix 1 and Daily Mix 2. Sometimes you can work it out from the included songs, but other times it can be more mysterious.

Example playlists include Pop Mix and 2000s Mix

In contrast, the names of the new Spotify Mixes are much clearer. A marketing image released by Spotify show playlists with names like Pop Mix, 2000s Mix, and Drake Mix. Hopefully itll make it easy to know what kind of music youll find in each playlist without having to look at its track list.

According to Spotify, each Mix category will include multiple playlists, and theyll update frequently to stop your listening from getting stale. Once available, you should be able to find them within Search in the Made For You hub.

I mean, do you really like an artist if you stream instead of buying their music?

By LawFri on 03.31.21 8:02am

Yes. Buying isnt the smart choice for consumers, and at least for the bands I listen to, money was made on the road, not from record sales

By MosquitoControl on 03.31.21 8:06am

Yep, as with most things, it isnt as binary as some would make it seem. I can stream an artist, then also pay for a vinyl, buy a t-shirt, and pay to see them in concert. They make A LOT more off those last three than they would for me buying a digital copy of their album.

Surprise, most people dont "really like" any artists, so streaming is enough for them.

By pokkipikko on 03.31.21 9:01am

There isnt much money in royalties these days. If you really like an artist and want to support them, you see them live or buy their merch.

By nickguy69 on 03.31.21 9:19am

What are you talking about? Its 2021, people arent buying CDs or loading up their iTunes library anymore. Streaming is the future of the music industry. In fact, it actually opens the door for more artists to be discovered as the barrier to entry doesnt rest at a record label or shelf space in a store. Artists can still make their millions with a record label, on tour or selling merch.

By Echo_One on 03.31.21 9:22am

Barrier to entry like that hasnt existed for a long time

Youve been able to self publish to iTunes or sites like Bandcamp for probably 10-15 years now.

Ah yes, the No True Scotsman for music. Guess I dont really like those artists Ive listened to thousands of times on spotify and youtube.

By Kosi_coco on 03.31.21 11:13am

Yes. I am one going to buy an artists album once. So one time revenue from me. If I stream their music for years they still get money from me. If I include their music in playlists I share and people stream that playlist when someone else plays it they are now helping to pay the artist I love.

Its features like this that prove that Spotify is better than piracy [one of their original goals when creating the service]. Personally, I blast through "Discover Weekly" and "Release Radar" each week, and its amazing how much great music youll find that matches your tastes. ["Repeat Rewind" and "Your Top Songs of 2020" are also great]

Sounds like this will be a hybrid of "Daily Mix" and "Discover Weekly" which is a good idea. Hopefully you can give a thumbs-down to bands to help further influence the recommendations.

Definitely agree on Release Radar, its one of my top favorites features of Spotify. As for the changes in this article, I love it. I really hated the old "mix 1", "mix 2" naming and this is much clearer in the new Made for You section. "Indie Mix", "Punk Mix", etc. are nice and clear, and you still have the artist radio section below.

Agreed their algorithms are top notch!

Thats why Ive stuck with them over Apple Music and others.

Personalization is so on Spotify.

Credit where it is due I am happy to see Spotify doing something new for music listeners. Also it is odd I can see the mixes but this was in no way highlighted in the app.
