FREQUENTLY BOUGHT TOGETHERI’m a huge fan of vitamin C serums since they do so many great things for your skin. Research proves that Vitamin C helps build collagen, fade dark spots, and give your skin a healthy glow. These aren’t just marketing claims, the data backs it up! Who wouldn’t love one product that does the job of 3? I know I’m always rushed for time in the morning, and I’m willing to bet you are too. I love products that save me time, but I also love ingredients I trust, and Vitamin C is definitely one of my favorites! As a bonus, some of the best vitamin C serums can be really inexpensive. Today I’m going to take an in-depth look at one of those bargains. It’s a new serum from Timeless Skincare – The 10% Vitamin C+E Ferulic Acid Serum. Note: This post may contain affiliate links. I bought the Timeless Vitamin C+E Ferulic Serum with my own money. About Timeless SkincareTimeless has been a cult favorite brand among skincare addicts for years. They recently gained more recognition from the general public when they started to sell products in CVS stores. Timeless is cruelty-free, which I know is important to many of us. They use no synthetic dyes or fragrances which is really critical to me and anyone who has sensitive skin. One of the best things about Timeless is the prices! They are truly bargain-priced given the high quality of the products they offer. Their most popular product is the 20% Vitamin C+E Ferulic Acid Serum, considered to be an inexpensive dupe to the wildly popular Skinceuticals C+E Ferulic Serum. I’ve used both of them and find the Timeless works just as well as the Skinceuticals but was too strong for me. Timeless also offers several other products with high concentrations of effective ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid and coenzyme Q10. What to look for in a Vitamin C SerumThis serum contains the ascorbic acid form of vitamin C. Multiple studies show Ascorbic Acid to be the most effective form of vitamin C. The downside to ascorbic acid is that it is very unstable in air and water. It oxidizes quickly, becoming not just useless, but actually harmful for your skin. When looking for a serum that has ascorbic acid make sure it’s in packaging to protect it from the air. An open jar, for example, would be less than ideal. An airtight pump bottle would be best. Also, the packaging should be opaque to protect it from light. You also want to look for ingredients that have been proven to help stabilize the Vitamin C and keep it fresher longer. Ferulic Acid is one of the best stabilizing ingredients and you’ll often see that included. Lastly, you want to pay attention to the percentage of ascorbic acid in the product. Some brands don’t disclose the percentage of Vitamin C in the product and that’s a dealbreaker for me! I’m not going to spend my money unless I know the percentage of active ingredients that I’m getting. There’s no one right percentage of vitamin C for everyone. I find 15% and 20% formulas too strong for my sensitive skin. They tend to make my skin red, sometimes for several hours. That’s why I was excited to see this new 10% formula! How to use Vitamin CVitamin C provides amazing antioxidant protection from the sun’s UV rays so I recommend you use it in the morning. I like to use retinoids at night since they degrade in sunlight. Retinoids are also drying and using them at night allows me to slather a heavy moisturizer on top. Vitamin C should be used on freshly washed skin, so you want to make sure it’s the first step in your skincare routine. Moisturizers and sunscreens should be used AFTER your vitamin C. Alright, I feel like we’ve already covered a lot about vitamin C so it’s time to get down to the actual review! This serum is very light, with a watery consistency. When I first started using the product it was crystal clear, which is exactly what you want with a Vitamin C serum. As it oxidizes, it will turn yellow and then orange. Ideally, you’ll never see your serum turn yellow because you’ll use it up before this happens. I apply two to three pumps for my entire face and 4 to 5 pumps if I’m including my neck. And I highly recommend you do include your neck and even your chest if you have sunspots. This goes for retinoids and sunscreen too. It’s quick to do and will keep you from having saggy skin and sun spots on your neck. There is no fragrance included so the only scent is the natural ingredients. And unfortunately, one of those ingredients doesn’t smell so great. 😟 Ferulic Acid is the cultprit. I’ve used many products with it and it’s widely thought to have a “hot dog water” smell. So yes it sounds nasty, but it only lasts a few seconds and it’s not overpowering. Ferulic acid is a powerhouse ingredient that helps stabilize vitamin C as well as provide antioxidant protection on its own. So I am really glad it’s included and, to be honest, I don’t think I’d buy an ascorbic acid serum without it. PackagingThe Timeless 10% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid serum comes in a bright orange bottle with a pump. This is a perfect package for an ascorbic acid vitamin C product! Both air and light cause oxidation so this pump bottle keeps your serum fresher longer. I have seen some complaints online of the bottles leaking but I haven’t had that happen to me in the two bottles I’ve used so far. However, It’s something you may want to consider when traveling. I bring my bottle along with me and tuck it in a small pocket in my toiletry case. That keeps it upright and I’ve never had a problem with it leaking. The second great thing about the packaging is that Timeless offers various sizes. You can get the serum in a half-ounce, 1-ounce, or 4-ounce bottle. The half-ounce is great for trying out a product or travel. I usually get the 1-ounce size as I feel it lasts long enough that I’m not having to constantly buy more but not long enough for the serum to oxidize. The 4 ounce is a super value but would last so long for me I’d worry about it going bad. If you have more than 1 person in your home using the serum it would be great for several people to share. IngredientsHere are the ingredients directly from the Timeless website: Water, Ethoxydiglycol, L-Ascorbic Acid, Propylene Glycol, Alpha Tocopherol, Polysorbate 80, Panthenol, Ferulic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Benzylalcohol, Dehydroacetic Acid Standout ingredients are ascorbic acid, ferulic acid, and alpha tocopherol, which is another name for vitamin E. Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid help keep the ascorbic acid stable, as well as serve as antioxidants on their own. It’s also great to see panthenol and sodium hyaluronate included as they soothe and hydrate skin. As mentioned earlier, there are no artificial dyes or fragrances included and no irritating citrus oils added. The ascorbic acid by itself is strong, so I’m glad nothing else was added that could cause trouble for those of us with sensitive skin. ResultsOver time you can expect to see a brighter, more even skin tone using this serum. It also should help fade dark spots, as ascorbic acid inhibits melanin production. Additionally, there’s the benefit of antioxidant protection, which you will not see immediately but in the long term helps reduce sun and environmental damage. I feel antioxidants are super important for us women over 40 (and really you should start earlier) because they fight so many signs of aging. I’ve been using the Timeless 10% Vitamin C+E Ferulic Acid serum for about 4 months now and I definitely plan to continue! I have noticed a slight fading of dark spots and a brighter skin tone. I would say my skin has more of a “glow” to it. One of the main reasons I love ascorbic acid is for the long-term benefits. I know that it’s helping my skin build collagen, which begins to decline slightly every year in our 30’s. It also is helping my sunscreen protect my skin from UV rays. Even though I can’t see all of these results after just 4 months, I trust the science and know that I’m doing something good for my skin. At the time I’m writing this I haven’t seen the 10% serum available at CVS, only the 20%. If that changes, I’ll update this post. Final thoughts on Timeless Vitamin C+E Ferulic Acid SerumOverall I highly recommend this serum for you no matter your age or skin type. It’s gentle enough that most people with sensitive skin can tolerate it well. If you don’t have sensitive skin you may enjoy the 20% version for even quicker benefits. It also comes in perfect packaging for a Vitamin C serum and is a great value. Check the current price here. While other companies may have cheaper options available I think this is a great price for a serum with proven ingredients and packaging that works for ascorbic acid. For those with very sensitive skin, I recommend starting out with the half-ounce size. If it’s too strong I would try the Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum instead. It’s a vitamin C derivative (sodium ascorbyl phosphate) that is more gentle than ascorbic acid and still does great things for the skin. Is timeless vitamin C serum stable?6. Quite Stable for an Unstable Ingredient. Timeless website indicated the serum as having a shelf life of just 3 months. I'm happy to report that my first bottle in 2018 was still white and clear even after 6 months.
