Khiếm thính là tình trạng một người hoặc một động vật có thính giác kém trong khi cá thể khác cùng một loài có thể nghe thấy âm thanh đó dễ dàng.[1][2] Bệnh do nhiều yếu tố khác nhau, bao gồm tuổi tác, tiếng ồn, bệnh tật, hóa chất và các chấn thương vật lý.

Khiếm thích toàn cầu ảnh hưởng khoảng 10% dân số ở những cấp khác nhau.[4] Nó gây bệnh tật trung bình đến nghiêm trọng khoảng 124,2 triệu người năm 2004 [107,9 triệu ở các nước thu nhập thấp và trung bình].[10] Trong số này 65 triệu bị lúc còn nhỏ.[11] Khi sinh có tỉ lệ ~3/1000 ở các nước phát triển và hơn 6/1000 ở các nước đang phát triển có các vấn đề về tai.[11]
