1. Verify the error message on the display. The lower part of the display will tell which cover is open.
- If the lower part of the display reads 'Close the Front Cover', continue to .
- If the lower part of the display reads 'Close the ADF Cover', go to .
- If the lower part of the display reads 'Close the Back Cover', go to .
2. Press the cover release button and then open the front cover. Remove the drum and toner assembly from the machine.
3. Reinsert the drum and toner assembly into the machine.
4. Close the front cover firmly and make sure both the left and right sides are closed completely.
- If the message 'Cover is Open' is still on the display, continue to the next step.
5. Turn the Brother machine around with the back of the machine facing you.
6. Open the back cover by pulling on the tab in the center of the cover and swing it down.
7. Open the fuser cover [1] by pulling on the green tabs at the left and right side.
8. If there is paper inside the machine carefully remove it.
9. Close the fuser cover, then the back cover. Close them securely.
- If the message 'Cover is Open' is still on the display, continue to the next step.
10. Unfold the document support tray and open the ADF.
11. If paper is found in the ADF, carefully remove the jammed document by pulling it to the left side
- Do not pull the document to the right. If the document cannot be pulled to the left, leave the ADF cover open and press the STOP/EXIT key. This will feed the document far enough so that it can be pulled to the left.
12. Check for and remove any small pieces of paper or other objects stuck in the ADF.
13. Close the ADF cover fully ensuring it clicks into place
14. If the message 'Cover is Open' is still on the display, turn off the power switch [located on the right side of the machine] for 5 seconds, then turn the power switch back on.
- If the error is cleared, make a blank copy from the ADF.
- If the error does not return, discontinue troubleshooting.
If the problem continues, Check the warranty status of your machine by clicking on the Machine Warranty Calculator.
If in warranty, contact Brother Customer Support or locate a Brother Authorized Service Center to schedule product replacement or repair.
If out of warranty, locate a Brother Authorized Service Center. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
