For me, the draw of using film simulations and processing RAWs in camera is hard to ignore, even if the Fuji doesn't have an X-trans sensor. Coupled with an excellent lens lineup and the possibility to upgrade to cameras like the X-T3/X-T30 or even the X-H1 in the future makes the X-A5 a very compelling choice.

The Canon, surprisingly, has the exact lenses I want - the 22mm f/2 is compact and sharp, which is perfect for self-shots. Then, there's the 11-22mm f/4-f/5.6 which is the most affordable, compact, sharp and inexpensive wide zoom lens with image stabilization for any APS-C camera ever. Perfect little lens for vlogging.

  • The Sony E 10-18 f/4 OSS has QC issues and is expensive, while the XF 8-16/XF 10-24 are very large (even if they are well worth the cost).

Of course, there's the new 32mm f1.4, which is perfect for street photography. The Canon also has a native EF-EFM adapter, which gives me access to a myriad of lenses.

If I had to summarize my decision, it would be:

  • The Canon M100 is the perfect camera for me, even with the limited native lens selection, and gives me the option to use full frame glass. However, it does not have a fully fleshed out ecosystem with no true high-end APS-C competitor to Fuji and Sony.
  • The Fuji X-A5 isn't exactly what I'm looking for now, though it comes very close and even gives me useful features such as in-camera RAW conversion, film simulations, and handy vlogging tools such as a mic input and a hotshoe. It has a fully fleshed out system with high end APS-C bodies, an excellent native APS-C lens selection, and doesn't push you to full frame like so many other manufacturers do.

Given the information above, what would you suggest?

Sony a6000 Sony a7 III Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 III

For vlogging a compact solution like the rx100 is ideal. Any version does the trick. Good sound too.

Why would anyone buy mirorless just for doing videos of himself? Awkward!

Then again, it is true that youtubers nowadays use an awful lot of high end gear in order to immortalise ther almost worthless monologues.

Example i hear the guy from Linus Tech Tips uses a $100.000 camera setup for his youtube show. And i'm thinking "Dude, you're funny, but not 100.000 dollar worth of funny". I watch stand up comedy shot on 100 dollar cams which is a lot more entertaining and relevant than what the vast majority of youtubers do.

Actually, as a rule of thumb for youtube, the quality of the video is directly disproportionate with the quality of the actual content.

I think this is more related to narcissism than technology really. No camera is capable is capturing all that ego.

Re: Fuji X-A5 vs Canon M100

Well, regardless of any views on vlogging , I really love shooting (casual) video with my M5 (same 24 MP DPAF sensor and ecosystem as the M100). Touchscreen AF is just wonderful to use.

Biased, negative and unhelpful.

I don't shoot for YouTube at all or any other social media platform, but it shouldn't matter even if I did.

I don't do the vlog thing, so I will pass over that. For stills, maybe consider a Canon M6 over the M100. Fuji almost tempted me away from M4/3, but I'm not convinced that the Fuji zoom lens selection is as complete as Canon EF-S or M4/3. Links for lots of opinions -

Does X-A5 Represent Fuji Well?

Switching from Sony E to Canon EF-M - thoughts?

I'd like to buy a new crop mirrorless camera purely for self shots and vlogging.

First, the Fuji:

has a hotshoe, better battery life and mic input; uses a high quality and complete native APS-C lens lineup; has film simulation/in camera RAW conversion.

Then, the Canon:

is lighter, cheaper and smaller; is fully compatible with EF/EF-S lens with an adapter; has all the lenses I want, even in the very small native EF-M lineup.

it's easy to use Canon DSLR lens with the M100 (and M5, M50, etc)

I suppose it depends on the meaning of "fleshed out ecosystem"

I was in the same situation facing similar question no so long ago, to do some vlogging but mainly to learn about shooting general videography and photography. I did a lot of reading up on numerous reviews and watching loads of YouTube videos on what to look for when looking for a beginner ILC for “vlogging” and shooting videos and photos. I learned that autofocus and face tracking was one of the most important considerations when looking at a camera for vlogging. I narrowed my choice to either a Sony A5100 or the M100 based on the fact that Sony and Canon have some the most reliable autofocus systems in the industry. Also when looking to expand as your skills grow, I saw that Sony lenses seem to be significantly more expensive than those from Canon. In the end I chose the M100, based on reviews, as it has one of the most beginner friendly controls and really easy to use menu system giving auto/semi auto and full manual controls. This has really helped me learned to shoot and not put me off with getting frustrated with complicated menu systems and controls.

One thing I didn’t consider was audio. The M100 has no audio input and therefore you will have to rely on either the internal mic of the camera or separate external mic that you will have to sync up in post. The internal mic is passable for general first time videography/vlogging, but I think you will find that in the long run the audio will be somewhat lacking. The M100 is a great little camera and the f2.0 22m prime lens, which I also have, is pin sharp but possibly not the best for vlogging as there is no I.O.S and is too cropped in unless you have long arms. In hindsight, I think it would be worth spending a little more and go with the Canon M50 as that camera does come with an external mic input.
