Youtube music can't add to playlist

The latest tweak to YouTube Music sees the mobile apps get the new “Add to playlist” UI that was first introduced on the web app. It’s still in testing and not yet widely rolled out.

Update 2/22: As of today, the revamped “Add to playlist” page is widely rolled out on Android [version 4.64+] and iOS [4.65+]. Users only get five Recent playlists in the top carousel, while YouTube Music marks which ones are stored locally for offline playback. You can even add songs to the “Your likes” playlist this way.

Original 1/28: Today, the “Add to playlist” sheet on Android and iOS is equally split between “Recent” and “All playlists.” You get a simple list view and a “New playlist” button at the very bottom.

This new interface, which is full width, makes use of a carousel for the “Recent” section and shows playlist covers, as well as the number of songs included. “All playlists” is still a list, but you now get artwork to help quickly identify your collections. Meanwhile, YouTube Music makes use of a “New Playlist” FAB to let you see more of the list.

It’s identical to the version YouTube Music has offered on the Progressive Web App for the past few months. The cross-platform consistency is nice and makes this rollout inevitable.

At the moment, this new “Add to playlist” has been spotted by at least two users. It’s not yet widely available, while there are reports of some initial buggy behavior.

The feature is currently in testing and there's much room for improvement

YouTube music still lacks a few features compared to other streaming services, especially its predecessor Google Play Music. It is slowly improving as things are added and bugs are fixed, though. One of the more annoying aspects of YouTube Music is how your library is handled, but Google is now testing a Library Tracks playlist that should go some way to ease the issue.

Reddit user u/Iordbrack spotted the new playlist over the weekend, and it pretty much does what the name tells you. The playlist will show every song in your library regardless of whether it's been liked or not. One benefit is that you can easily download your entire library in one go. Do that, and you'll effectively have all of your playlists available offline, even if you haven't downloaded them individually.

Sadly, there's one major caveat: the music uploaded to your library isn't included. If you're a former Play Music user wanting your entire library in one place, you're still out of luck. However, this could change as this playlist is still in the testing phase, only showing up for a few users. What's more, trying to access it directly will result in a 404 error. You need to download it and set the app to offline mode to use it at present. Hopefully, as it's improved, uploaded music will be included too.

Some of my old favorites are new again in YouTube Music [Image credit: Ara Wagoner / Android Central]

  • There's a playlist bug impacting a number of YouTube Music users on iOS and Android.
  • For some users, songs are randomly showing as unavailable in both playlists and albums.
  • This bug first started surfacing a week ago, and clearing downloads and app data does not fix the issue.
  • Google support is aware of the issue and engineers are working on a fix.

This has been a roller coaster week for YouTube Music users: first YouTube finally announced it was rolling out collaborative playlists a couple days ago, and then a playlist bug that initially reared its head a week ago came back and impacted a far larger number of users, making songs randomly appear unavailable in some playlists and albums [since albums are technically a sub-type of playlists in YouTube Music].

from r/YoutubeMusic

You'd be forgiven if you saw this in a playlist and initially thought "Oh, great, the rights lapsed again; I'll need to go search and re-add all these songs", but no, this is something new and something a number of users are facing. The easy way for us to tell it's a new feature is that this is impacting both catalog songs and personally uploaded music at random.

As mentioned, this bug first cropped up a week ago impacting a smaller number of users, and I did see this a week ago with some of my own. When that happened, I looked at the playlists in question, and found they were playlists that were set to Unlisted or Public. I set the playlists to Private, cleared the downloaded copy of the playlist and then re-launched the app and things were working again. However, I was only seeing this bug with personally-uploaded music on playlists that were shareable, but some users have reported issues even with playlists that were already private, so your mileage may vary.

Google is aware of the bug and working on a solution, but there's no timeline yet. This big came rather suddenly, and hopefully it will depart just as suddenly — and soon.

In the meantime, though, this bug is only impacting playlists on YouTube Music, so you can use the main YouTube app to listen to music while you wait for it to be fixed.
