Media Access Control (MAC) address is a unique identifier assigned to each network adapter of any device.  A Linksys router has a Wireless MAC Filter feature that lets you permit or prevent users from accessing the wireless network by blocking or allowing the MAC addresses of computers or devices.

This article will guide you on how to configure the Wireless MAC Filter feature on a Linksys router’s web-based setup page to permit or prevent the wireless devices connected to your Linksys Wireless-N Range Extenders (RE1000 and RE3000W).  To know how, perform the following steps:

         i.   Obtain the range extender's MAC address
         ii.  Obtain the Global and Virtual MAC addresses
         iii. Set up Wireless MAC Filter

NOTE:  The steps below will apply to Linksys RE1000 and RE3000W v1 ONLY.  The first two (2) steps above are done on the range extender’s web-based setup page while the last one (1) is on the router’s web-based setup page.

Obtain the range extender's MAC address

Step 1:
Access the range extender’s web-based setup page.  For instructions, click here.

Step 2:
Click Status > Device Info and check the Extender Mac Address values.

Obtain the Global and Virtual MAC addresses

The Global and Virtual MAC addresses are obtained from all wireless computers or devices that are connected to the range extender.

NOTE:  A MacBook®’s Global and Virtual MAC addresses are used in this example.

Step 1:
On the range extender’s web-based setup page, click Status > WLAN Statistics.

Step 2:
Click  at the bottom of the page.

Step 3:
On the Wireless Clients Table window, take note of the values under the Global and Virtual MAC section.

Step 4:
Click Close.

Set up Wireless MAC Filter

After getting the range extender’s MAC address and your device’s Global and Virtual MAC addresses, you can start setting up the router’s Wireless MAC Filter.  To do this, follow the steps below:

Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page.  For instructions, click here.

NOTE:  If you are using a Mac® computer to access the router's web-based setup page, click here.

Step 2:
Click Wireless > Wireless MAC Filter > Enabled.

Step 3:
Select any desired MAC filtering setup options in the Access Restriction section.

•   Prevent PCs listed below from accessing the wireless network - computers on the MAC Address Filter List will not have access to the wireless network.

•   Permit PCs listed below to access the wireless network - only computers on the MAC Address Filter List will have access to the wireless network.

NOTE:  In this example, the MAC address values that you will enter in the list will be prevented from accessing the wireless network.

Step 4:
In the MAC Address Filter List section, manually enter the Extender’s MAC address and the Global and Virtual MAC addresses of the wireless device connected to the range extender.

NOTE:  In the example below, the MAC address values entered refer to the following devices:

•   MAC 01 - Range extender’s MAC address
•   MAC 02 - MacBook’s Global MAC address
•   MAC 03 - MacBook’s Virtual MAC address

Step 5:
Click .

You have now successfully configured the Wireless MAC Filter feature on your router with the range extender.
