Is Honda making a 2023 Civic?

We promised our daughter a new car if she graduated college, and she did—with a perfect 4.0 GPA and an invitation to join Mensa. We’re very impressed. We’re thinking about a Honda Civic, and we’d like to get her a new one. What’s the release date for the 2023 Honda Civic?

The 2023 Honda Civic’s release date is expected to be between the end of August and early October 2022. Since Honda released a freshly redesigned Civic for 2022, the 2023s aren’t expected to be that different.

That being said, there are some changes.

The Civic will offer a similar trim line, with the LX, Sport, EX, Touring, and Si on offer for around $22,700 to $30,000.

The newest wrinkle in the 2023 Civic lineup will be the re-introduction of the Honda Civic Type R Hatchback. Based on the body of the 11th-generation Civic, the newest Type R will be a hot hatch and is expected to produce around 300 horsepower. Not much else is known about the Type R, but it’s expected to sell for between $30,000 and $40,000.

There’s been no word yet on a hybrid Civic for 2023 in the U.S., but there will be a hybrid Civic on sale in Europe for 2023. It won’t be a surprise if Honda brings the hybrid across the pond in 2024.

    • For 2023, the Honda Civic's LX base model is no more, meaning the Sport is now the least expensive trim.
    • The better-equipped Sport starts at $25,745, which is $2100 more than last year's LX trim.
    • Other trim levels are up by between $500–$700 compared with last year for both the sedan and hatchback bodystyles.

The elimination of the base model is becoming a common refrain at Honda—and many other automakers. The new 2023 CR-V dropped the lowest LX trim level for its redesign, resulting in a significant rise in its starting price, and now the 2023 Civic sedan and hatchback are following the same lead. There will be no Civic LX for 2023, meaning the lineup now starts with the Civic Sport, which costs $25,745, or $2100 more than the 2022 Civic LX.

Fortunately, you do get more for your money, as the Sport comes with extra equipment including 18-inch wheels, proximity-key entry, and paddle shifters for the continuously variable automatic transmission. The Civic Sport is now the only version of the Civic with the naturally aspirated 158-hp 2.0-liter inline-four engine; the higher-end Civic Si, EX, and Touring trims come with a more powerful 1.5-liter turbo-four. The Civic Sport hatchback, which starts $100 higher than the sedan, still offers a six-speed manual transmission as a no-cost option.

Honda says that these pricing and packaging changes are meant to "better align availability with demand." Honda, and the Civic in particular, has faced significant supply-chain issues this year, and Civic sales are down by more than 50 percent through the first three quarters of this year. Automotive News data shows a 20-day supply for the Civic as of October 1. Skewing the mix towards the more expensive trims also surely helps Honda's bottom line, as those models are likely more profitable for the company.

Budget-minded compact-sedan shoppers may do better to look elsewhere in the meantime, as models including the Hyundai Elantra ($21,595), Kia Forte ($20,585), and VW Jetta ($21,510) now undercut the Civic by thousands of dollars in terms of base price.

The 2023 Honda Civic sedan lineup drops the base LX trim from the lineup. This means that the Sport grade is now the entry-level model with a starting cost of $25,745 (after the $1,095 destination fee) for the four-door. The least expensive four-door model is $2,100 more than last year.

Motor1.com asked Honda about 2023 Honda Civic hatchback prices. A spokesperson told us: "The 2023 Civic Hatchback isn’t on sale yet. So, no pricing is available. It’s expected to go on sale within the next few weeks."

While it's more expensive, the Civic Sport has more standard equipment than the LX. It gets 18-inch gloss black wheels and chrome exhaust trim. Inside, there is leather wrapping around the steering wheel and shift knob. The stereo has eight speakers. There's remote engine start and smart entry with walk-away auto lock.

With the loss of the LX, the Sport is the only Civic available with the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It makes 158 horsepower (118 kilowatts) and 138 pound-feet (187 Newton-meters) of torque. The EX and Touring use a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 180 hp (134 kW) and 177 lb-ft (240 Nm). The Sport, EX, and Touring grades come with a CVT.

There's also the Civic Si sedan. It has a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder with 200 hp (149 kW) and 192 lb-ft (260 Nm). The only gearbox for it is a six-speed manual.

The table below shows the pricing for the 2023 Civic lineup:

Model 2023 Model Year Price (After $1,095 Destination Fee) 2022 Model Year Price (After $1,095 Destination Fee Price Change
    Sedan LX N/A $23,645 N/A
    Sedan Sport $25,745 $25,045 $700
    Sedan EX $27,145 $26,645 $500
    Sedan Touring $30,745 $30,245 $500
    Sedan Si $29,195 $28,595 $600

What's new in the 2023 Civic?

Compared to the standard Civic, the Type R's major changes are centered around the seats, new red upholstery and, of course, a teardrop-style aluminum gear lever. There is also a new gauge cluster for the Type R that offers a traditional speedometer view this time around.

Will there be a 2023 Civic hatchback?

What's New for 2023? The Civic was fully redesigned for 2022, so for 2023 Honda has made no changes to the compact sedan and hatchback other than dropping the base LX trim. The high-performance Civic Type R hatchback rejoins the lineup this year, but we review that model separately.

Will there be a 2023 Civic Coupe?

Although the coupe body is no longer offered, the Civic is still available in sedan and hatchback body styles.

Is Honda going to bring back the Civic?

The new-generation Honda Civic of 2022 is expected to make a comeback in India after a gap of five years. Honda Cars India discontinued the Civic in 2013 due to low demand. The upcoming tenth-generation variant was announced at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo.
