Hello,

New to this site or any type of site like this. Have a huge problem. Have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6035 Laptop running Windows 7 SP1. Three days ago all of a sudden, computer boots up to a boot menu screen where as before it just went straight to Windows Login screen, myself or guest. Options on boot menu are HDD1/SDD1, eSATA, FDD, CD/DVD, LAN, USB AND . Computer keyboard 80% disabled. You push keys, don't work, then one does so it's impossible. You can only hit enter as it's at the first one HDD/SDD1. When you do you are brought to a 2nd screen: Edit windows boot options for : windows 7.

Path: \windows\system32\winload.exe Partition: 2 Hard Disk: d2783818 and then it has [ /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN ] The 2nd possible screen that can come up and does so more frequently then this last one I just listed is: To much to write but ultimately has two options. Launch startup repair (recommended) or start windows normally. Startup repair acts like it is trying to repair something but never does. start normally attempts to but after 6 to 7 attempts under that one it finally boots to windows. i Plugged in an external usb keyboard and was able to type normal. So back to the menu where it said enter setup (bios) I go there an am greeted with a little box covering the bios screen and says, " Exit Saving Changes, yes or no. You select no it just puts it highlighted back on yes. Bottom line is your locked out of the bios. Now lets go back to be let all the way up to the windows login in screen. Click on mine and enter my password and I'm in. Time to go to work, it only to 4 hours to get in. What did I find. Every rescue cd/dvd, usb flash drive etc will not operate from the dvd rom or any usb port. It just beeps. Load Kaspersky in the DVD and beep, try to reboot as use, beep. Everything is locked down. Download Malwarebytes and a whole host of others, cannot run, gives errors but Malwarebytes did and another but found nothing tangible.I removed battery and hard drive, performed the short of the cmos and started up like your supposed to. I look around the other side and what do I see, the boot menu screen. This isn't working obviously. What I did realize was even with no hard drive and booting up, it would still go to the boot menu screen. Bios virus? Not likely in todays times but wouldn't surprise me either. Ran Administrator at dos to look at bcdedit, appears normal. Ran msconfig to boot to safe mode, never did it, gave up. I'm stumped and I'm the type of person that never gives up and still haven't. Sorry this is long but tried to give the full picture. Almost forgot. I did try changing the script after the OPTIN to /bcdedit/set optionsedit yes and also no and also there's one more but can't remember it right now, it's late.

Thanks for any help or just taking the time to read it.

If I had to hazard a guess you have a motherboard problem. Remove the battery and power plug. Remove the hard drive as shown in the below video. Attach your bootable USB or a insert a bootable DVD. Boot the computer while tapping F12 to get a boot menu. Does the computer boot normally? If not then you will need to take it to a good shop for diagnosis. The A505 has a known overheating problem.

System debuted circa 2010. IMO, that means that almost anything might go wrong with it, depending on the care the owner invested in maintaining it.

Have you made any backups?

Do you have a history of problems with this system?

What beep pattern occurred when you finally able to boot into Windows?

To enter the BIOS, per :https://support.dynabook.com/support/viewContentDetail?soid=627009 :

F2 key method Turn the computer on. If you see an invitation to press the F2 key to enter Setup, do so. The Setup screen will appear.

Tell us the BIOS version...and tell us if the main screen, date/time, and boot order reflected in the BIOS...seem correct/proper.

JohnC_21. Thanks for a response. I already tried that 2 days ago. That's how I kind of came to the conclusion, it must be some kind of a virus. I very well could be wrong. Bios won't let you in. When you click on the bios option your greeted with a screen trying to get you to exit already, no other option. Keyboard doesn't work normally, only some of the keys, unusable. When do get the chance to get into windows Usb ports and DVD drives will not allow you to boot from them. I'm trying to upload a picture of the bios but can't see where an attachment icon is. The My Media doesn't seem like the thing to use.

Thanks for your help though

Hamluis, . Afternoon Sir. Thanks for responding. I have not made backups officially, like through windows or Norton, Ghost, Acronis etc. When this happened I did pull the drive and dumped what I wanted on to another system.

I have had no problems with this system. The only thing I can think of is a virus. The last 2 or 3 days before this happened, I was downloading some music files from a site I find that gave you the option of the format and quality. I had recently found an old MP3 player I purchased years ago and had never used. Figured I put some music on it and use when exercising. My guess is it has to or might have come through there. Doesn't help there was no Antivirus software on there.

When you hit enter and it try to go to windows, it goes into a continuous beep. beep, beep, beep, beep etc. Screen says starting windows.Press power button and it shuts down.

I've seen that same bios sheet, use every method except the Toshiba Hardware Utility method. Guess I'll give it a try and see what happens. Do you believe it's a virus or software/mechanical? No access to Bios, Usb Ports, DVD Drive for boot purposes and the boot up for the hard drive doesn't work, the BCD.

I've had many things go wrong with my systems since 1996...none of them had anything to do with a virus or malware, while some were just typical of the times and Windows...and some were just my fault. I suggest you put any thoughts about malware being responsible for everything that goes wrong with a computer system/situation...put that thought away. It's like blaming the devil for everything unpleasant while praising god for everything better-than-unpleasant

. It's a false way of perceiving that won't lead to success in trying to troubleshoot.

There is a tool that I want you to download and install (CrystalDiskInfo) that will reflect the SMART data. Take a screenshot of the displayed data and then attach it to your next post.

Thanks

Hamluis. Had a hard time sending this. I do not know how to attach a picture / file to this. I drug a picture of the results into this box at first and tried to send. Received error message cannot send/post that extension in this forum. It was extension .png. I had two other photos I was going to send but they came out so large and distorted I removed. It was of the boot up screen and the bios login. Anyway here is the results of that program you asked me to run. I have found that if I add the verbiage after the OPTIN below, the next time I boot it may work. Tried to send just now and now it says .jpg not allowed. I do not understand when I see a youtube video above attached to a reply a guy sent me.

Edit windows boot options for: windows 7

Path: \windows\systems32\winload.exe

Partition: 2

Hardisk: d2783818

[ /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN

bcdedit /set optionsedit No

bcdedit /set optionsedit yes Add either of the two to the left of this and it will boot next time some times.Picture below

(1) Take your screenshot(s) and save them somewhere you can find them and, if you wish crop image the to just show the relevant informatioin rather than the whole of your desktop.

(2) Start a new post. When you have written any text you want and are ready to add your picures click on the 'More reply options' button at the bottom right of the reply box.

(3) Click on the 'Browse' button and browse to and then select your 1st screenshot.

(4) Click 'Attach this file'

If you wish to add more than one screenshot repeat (3) and (4)

(5) Once you have attached one (or more) image another button will appear 'Use this image?' (or something similar). Click on this and your images will be added to your post.

You will see them in your post as links but when you have posted the reply they will appear normally as thumbnails, only very small images appear full size.

Evening All,

Thanks for the suggestions and help over the weeks. I have trouble shot day after day. Problem solved, it was the keyboard bad. Already ordered and installed. Booted right up with no problems. After having performed so many test and installed so much anti virus or malware software, dumped everything tonight and bringing it back to out of box state. Thanks again

Thanks for updating us! Many posters just abandon the thread and leave us hanging.\

I must admit, this is a new one for me; I have seen keyboards where certain keys don't work anymore or one gets stuck down, etc. Nothing this bad!

If there are no responses to my post for 3 days I remove it from my answer list. If you wish to continue the thread after 3 days please PM me.
