Resort is a feel-good season that lands in stores as people are planning party and get-away wardrobes. Champagne wishes and cabana dreams, in other words.
For snowbirds, there are garments infused with a tropical vibe communicated through colors—rainbow brights and sunset hues—as well as novelty prints, many featuring exotic blooms and palm fronds. The Americana tropes of the 1950s that were so prevalent in the spring menswear collections take the form of deb dresses and khakis that riff on GI favorites. Leather makes its way into the collections via the moto jacket, popularized by Marlon Brando in the 1953 classic The Wild One. Cotton shirting and shirred jersey are prevalent, as are tweedy suits featuring abbreviated jackets and micro-minis or shorts. Countering the ironic takes on “lady” dressing are Goth looks in black that take the LBD in a moodier direction that befits the times.
