What’s up guys, Sagi here and welcome to another Tech Gear Talk. Today we’re going to check out the Canon G1 X MKIII which is a high-end compact camera. I just took this camera with me on a 2 week trip to Italy and used it for both photography and video. We’re going to talk about why this is a very nice compact camera for beginner photographers, and for vlogging and creating YouTube content in general. (right after this)

The G1X Mark III is Canon’s flagship compact camera, and the only one to offer an APS-C sensor and a built-in zoom lens. There are some great features in this camera but also some things that I don’t really love so make sure you watch the full video to get a complete overview.

With new mirrorless camera like the Canon M6 and the Canon M50 and other compact cameras like the G7X MK II, you wouldn’t think that there isn’t room for the G1X MK III, but Canon made sure to include some features that would attract buyers to this higher price point.

Compact cameras have always been popular because of how light and portable they are and it’s nice to have one with such a large sensor.

My goal with every product review is to give you a detailed overview of the product features in a way that relate to real life use. If you find it helpful please let me know by giving it a like and hitting the subscribe and notification buttons for more camera and tech reviews.

There is a great deal right now and you can get $200 OFF the price of this camera if you use the links in the description.

If you do end up choosing to buy this camera or another, I would really appreciate you using the links in the description on or my website which help support my channel and allow me to create more helpful content for you.

I’m going to get into details for each aspect of the camera but I’ll start out with some overall key features.

G1 X Mark III Camera Highlights

  • The G1 X Mark III has a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor, it uses Canon’s super nice Dual Pixel autofocus system
  • It has the DIGIC 7 processor which improves speed and performance as well as image quality.
  • It has a 3” fully articulating touchscreen LCD and can shoot video at up to 1080P at 60fps.
  • The built-in 24-72mm equivalent lens also incorporates dual-sensing optical image stabilization
  • There is a really nice OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • it has Wi-Fi with NFC and bluetooth so that you can easily move images to your mobile device
  • You can also control the camera remotely for both photography and video although there are some limitations which I will mention later in this video

I’ve been pretty excited about trying out the G1X MK III, especially after how much I liked the G7X MK II so let’s jump into the features in a little more detail.

G1 X Mark III Sensor Size and Processor

The G1 X MK III comes with a really impressive 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor which which is something you don’t usually see in compact cameras. Normally you have to go to a mirrorless or a DSLR to get a sensor this big.

So right off the bat this is a major score for the G1X MK III. It does come at a cost though and the G1 X Mark III sells for $1,299, and remember that there is a special discount going on right now where you can get $200 OFF.

In general the bigger the sensor the better it is. Bigger sensor means better image quality because it’s able to use more information to create an image with more detail and better dynamic range. This APS-C sensor is excellent if you’re shooting portraits, landscape, doing street photography, if you want to take it with you while you travel or even just do family and lifestyle photography. It’s also a great choice for creating video for YouTube or if you’re just a hobbyist. It’s going to give you really nice and crisp video from a small camera. And like always, Canon’s color science is fantastic.

That was the sensor, let’s talk a little about the processor. Here, Canon used the DIGIC 7 processor which is the same processor used on the G7X MK II, the Canon SL2, M6, 5D MK II, and a bunch of other models. Together with the nice sensor, the G1X MK III will give you sharp images and video and better low light performance.

The DIGIC 7 also makes the camera very fast to operate. The G1XMKIII starts up really quickly, and is very nice and responsive for both video and stills. General menu operation is fast and things like Image preview and video playback again are very fast.

For photography, the DIGIC 7 allows the G1X MK III to have 9fps burst, or continuous, shooting with continuous autofocus. So you can just hold down the shutter and the camera will just keep firing. This is a nice feature if you’re photographing kids running around, if you’re as a sporting event, or any time when you’re shooting moving subjects. You can take multiple shots and pick your favorite one.

G1 X Mark III Resolution and Framerate

Next I want to talk about resolution and framerates. For video, the G1X MK III can shoot FULL HD, 1080P at 24, 30 and 60 fps. And this choice comes down to what kind of look you prefer to have for your video. If you like a more cinematic or softer look, you can shoot at 24fps and if you like a sharper more crisp look you can shoot at 60fps.I shoot most of my videos, including this one at 30 frames per second.

If you edit your videos at 30 fps like I do, you can play your 60fps footage at 30fps and you can slow things down by 50%. Some people find it disappointing that at this price point you’re we’re not getting 4K, which is available in similarly priced more versatile models from other manufacturers.

I always like to mention that when it comes to these types of features, you should ask yourself things like do you really need 4K? Can you even reasonably edit 4K footage on your existing machine? So when you evaluate cameras, always ask yourself how important each particular feature is to you now, or in the near future.

G1 X Mark III Lens

Alright, let’s move to the lens. The G1X MK III has a built-in 15-45mm 2.8-5.6 lens. With the APS-C crop factor, we’re getting the 35mm equivalent of 24-72mm. If you’re not familiar with crop factor, let me explain it quickly. Because the G1X MK II uses an APS-C sensor, and not a full frame sensor, we have to multiply the focal length by 1.6x in order to get the 35mm equivalent of this lens.

For example, this lens is a 15-45, which when I multiply it by 1.6 actually makes it a 24-72. What it means is that at 15mm this is not as wide as a 15mm lens would be on a full frame sensor camera, but it’s the same as a 24mm lens on a full sensor camera. Again, this lens is a little disappointing in terms of focal length but more importantly aperture or speed. The G7X MK II for example was a much faster 24-100mm equivalent lens at 1.8 – 2.8.

If this is confusing to you, the focal length means that you can zoom in and get closer to your subject. So instead of only going up to 72mm, the G7X MK II goes out to 100mm.

The aperture, or speed, means that the lens can open wider, and let more light in. This improves low-light performance and give you the ability to have a shallower depth of field, which is when the subject is in focus and the background is blurred out. I would have really liked to see a faster lens at this price point.

With that, the lens works great, is allows for smooth zoom while shooting video and gave me nice and sharp photos and video. Another feature to mention is that the lens does incorporate a dual sensing optical image stabilizer system to help minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops. This allows for sharper handheld shooting.

G1 X Mark III Autofocus

Alright, next, let’s talk about continuous autofocus. This is something that I suggest you don’t overlook when choosing a camera. And the good news is that the G1X MK III uses Canon’s Dual Pixel autofocus which is awesome.

For photography the dual pixel AF system works really well to acquire focus quickly and accurately. This really makes a difference when you’re shooting and tracking moving subjects because you’re able to get that critical focus for every shot.

For video, the G1X MK III has really smooth focusing when you change between different subjects or different distances in the frame. This is definitely one of the best autofocus systems out on the market at any price point. With Face Tracking priority, it does an super nice job at identifying and tracking faces as they move throughout the frame. And even as the person is moving and gets closer and farther away from the camera, the dual pixel AF has no problem keeping them in focus.

For video, that’s super important when you’re vlogging and walking around with the camera. You can always set your focus manually and lock it, but as you’re walking around, the camera moves, you don’t stay in exact same distance away from the camera, then your arm gets tired so you switch to your other arm.

A lot of people don’t realize is how much these little movements of the camera can affect focus. I’ve said it over and over about Canon cameras that use this system, the dual-pixel continuous autofocus system crushes it! One again, you can completely forget about focus altogether. The camera will automatically detect your face follow you and automatically adjust the focus. It’s so cool.

For the purpose of creating YouTube content, I think good continuous autofocus is definitely a feature that you’re going to want.

Another thing I can do is set up a scene with multiple items and click on different items in the screen I can easily change focus. So I can get a really cool transition where in my video I talk about one thing and then want to shift the viewers’ attention to something else, I can bring it into focus. I never need to worry about pulling focus, or messing around with the focus ring, I just click and the focus changes.

It does this really fast and smooth, and there is no hunting for focus. Which is when things keep coming into and out of focus because the autofocus system can’t quite identify what it should be zoning in on. There is none of that junk with the dual-pixel system and I can’t say enough nice things about it.

I do want to point out one thing that was disappointing to me and that is the the dual pixel AF does not work when you’re shooting in 4K. Instead the M50 uses contrast detection to maintain focus. It doesn’t do a bad job, but it’s not as good as the dual pixel.

For photography, you can still use the dual-pixel system if you want to frame your image and set focus and take pictures using the LCD display. And, if you want to use the really nice OLED EVF, you can STILL use the lcd display to set and change focus while shooting.

What’s really nice about Touch & Drag autofocus is that while you’re looking through the viewfinder, you control the focus point with your left thumb on the screen. So you never have to take the camera away from your face, you can reframe your shot, reselect the focus point and shoot. It’s really convenient.

This wasn’t a feature that was enabled by default so you need to go to SHOOTING SETTINGS (camera icon in the menu), page 2 Touch & Drag AF Settings and enable it

So if you want to use the rule of thirds, for example, and don’t want your subject in the middle of the frame, you can just move the point of focus off center to the one-third line on either side, then you can set focus and take the pictures without having to re-frame.

Without this kind of system you’d always have to get the focus with your subject in the center, then re-frame it on the one third line and take the shot. And if you wanted to take 4 shots, you’d have to keep doing it over and over. With these nine points, you can just set it one time and then keep shooting.

And the most important part for me here is speed. Because not having to waste time messing around with different settings, it’s all right at my fingertips.

G1 X Mark III Audio

The G1 X Mark III comes with a built-in microphone and that is another one of its weak points when it comes to video and vlogging. I talk about audio a lot and about how important it is to video, and in this case you will have to use the on-camera microphone which means that you’ll have to pay extra attention to any background noise that may become distracting.

I really wish that there was a mic input which would allow you to connect and external shotgun or lavalier microphone, and I’m not really sure why Canon didn’t add it to this camera. You’re paying a premium price and I think that’s a pretty big feature to leave out.

Now, if you’re vlogging and it’s always close to you or you’re in a quiet room or you don’t mind picking up some more ambient noise, it will work for you, but the sound is never going to be as good as you’ll get with an external microphone.

If you’re looking some another option from Canon that has mic input check out something like the M6, M50 or SL2. I’ll put some links in the description to a few other cameras in case this is a deal breaker for you.

G1 X Mark III Build & Battery

Next let’s talk about the size, weight and build quality of the G1 X MK III. We know it’s a compact camera, so it’s already going to be small and light. The lens retracts and you can easily fit this camera in your pocket.

Canon added a nice OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF) which is nice and bright, but does add a little to the size. The EVF is really nice to have especially when you’re taking photos outside because it eliminates any problems you might have when it’s super bright and it may be more challenging to see the screen. The body itself is made entirely of composite material but it’s pretty much covered with this rubbery grip all the way around.

There is also a small grip which is really nice to have on a small camera so that you don’t feel like you’re going to drop it. There are 2 dials available and the lens ring and you can program each one to do what you want for each of of the shooting modes. So for example, by default, if you’re in Manual Movie mode, the focus ring is set to Seamless Zoom, the front dial is set to Shutter Speed and the back dial is set to Aperture. But you can easily change any of them. For example, if you wanted the front ring to do manual focus instead, or wanted one of the dials to change ISO.

And you can do that for each shooting mode, so the dials can serve different purposes. This really saved me a lot of time when I shot in Manual mode, which is most of the time and could quickly get to the settings I wanted. This wasn’t something I expected from such a small camera and I’m glad that Canon thought to add the front dial.

Now let’s talk about the battery. The G1 X MK III uses Canon NB-13L Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (3.6V, 1250mAh). And it does an OK job but if you plan on taking this camera with you and using it for a full down while traveling or hiking, I would definitely suggest that you an extra battery or even 2 just to make sure.

When it comes to batteries I always rather have extra batteries that I don’t end up using rather then running out of power in the middle of the day. An this isn’t specific to the G1 X MK III, compact and mirrorless cameras end up using up a lot of battery power for several reasons, one of which is that the screen is usually left on.

G1 X Mark III Selfie Screen/Touch Screen

Let’s talk a little about the screen. The G1 X MK III has a fully articulating 3” touch screen which Canon calls the Vari-Angle. This is something you need if you’re a vlogger a youtuber and is a really nice feature to have for photography. If you’re behind the camera you just flip it and then lock it into place. If you’re in front of the camera, you can have it open on the side so you can see yourself .

You can also have it face up if you want to work with the camera on a tripod on at waist level or if you have the camera on the ground trying to get a really low angle. If you are shooting and holding the camera up in the air, you can have it pointed down and that also works for overhead shots.

It’s a full touchscreen so you can control the menu using the touch screen and change various settings and in the camera. Of course, as part of the dual-pixel autofocus system, you can touch anywhere on the screen to set focus. When you’re shooting photos you can either use the screen in liveview and then tap to focus and shoot. The screen is nice and bright and worked great for me indoor and outdoors.

Finally the body has a dust and moisture-resistant design that gives this camera some weather proofing and lets you use it in harsher conditions.

G1 X Mark III WIFI/Bluetooth/NFC

Next let’s talk about connectivity options. Like many of the other Canon cameras, the G1 X MKIII also has built in Wi-Fi with NFC (Near Field Communication) which lets you use the Canon camera connect app to, pair the camera with a smartphone or tablet so you can wirelessly share images and movies. This is really nice for when you’re doing a shoot and maybe you took images that you quickly want to post to your Instagram or Facebook profile, you can quickly transfer them to your phone and post them.

As far as remote control, this camera is somewhere between the M6 and the M50. If you’ve seen my review of the Canon M6 you know that I was frustrated by the fact that I could only shoot stills using the app, and I couldn’t start or stop video with it and definitely couldn’t change any of the settings with it. The M50 has full functionality and you can change any setting you want in any mode.

When I vlog or anytime when I’m in front of the camera, it’s great to be able to control the camera using the app. With the G1 X Mark III, I could start and stop video, take pictures. I could control exposure compensation, focus mode and focus point, and I could change the zoom. All of the other features were grayed out, regardless of what shooting mode I had the camera in. So I wasn’t even sure what aperture or shutterspeed the camera was using which was really strange.

I don’t understand why Canon can’t just be consistent about this functionality across every model.Just make them all work like the M50, please.

Who is the G1 X Mark III Right For?

Let’s talk a little about the skill level of this camera. The G1 X MK III is a compact camera, so by default I would assume it’s targeted at beginner photographers and videographers. But with all the features and the larger sensor it would work for more advanced users who are looking for a more compact solution to carry around.

Beginners, can put everything on Auto to start with, and then slowly learn how to use the other modes as they learn more about exposure in photography and video. For more advanced users, there is a ton of manual control that you can have for both video and photography.

Canon gx1 mark iii đánh giá năm 2024

G1 X Mark III Additional Features

I also want to talk about other features that this camera has that may help you make a buying decision. First I want to talk about image stabilization. The G1X does not use in-body image stabilization but the lens itself has a dual-sensing image stabilizer that is designed to minimize camera shake and produce sharper images and video when shooting handheld.

Remember that this is meant to help but isn’t going to produce results like the ones you would get from a 3-axis gimbal but it is supposed to give you 4 more stops to work with. I’ll put some links in the description to some gimbals that I think would work well with the G1 X Mark III.

Next, I already mentioned this before, but Canon included a really nice OLED electronic viewfinder. For example, if you wanted to add an EVF to the M6, you’d have to spend an extra $200. I know that a lot of photographers prefer using an EVF for portraits and it’s also a great feature for when it’s really bright outside.

Next I want to talk about timelapse. It’s super easy to shoot timelapse videos with the G1 X MK III. There are three specific timelapse scenarios built in (fast, slow, slower subject movement) which will automatically pick the right settings for your timelapse shot. Once you select these settings and tell it how many shots you want it to take, the camera will show you how long it will take to shoot, and how long the final timelapse video will be.

I will do a dedicated video to walk you through different types of timelapses so make sure you subscribe and hit that bell so that you get notified when it’s published. For photography, the M50 has a nice pop-up built-in flash, you just pull it up and it’s activated. It’s small but works nicely for a built-in flash on this size camera. Here is an example of how I used it as as a fill flash. I exposed this image for the sky, then added the flash to light up the subject. That’s where shooting in manual mode is so nice.

G1 X Mark III Final Thoughts

Ok, so I think the G1 X Mark III is a good choice for you if you’re looking for a compact camera with a great APS-C sensor. It’s a good camera for vlogging, creating YouTube content also if you want to have a really nice and portable camera for photography.

The APS-C sensor and the DIGIC 7 image processor are a great combo and give you very nice results in low light. You can shoot Full HD or 1080P in up to 60 FPS which also lets you do slow motion at 50% if you edit your videos in 30fps. The 24-72mm equivalent lens gives you nice focal range to work with but I do wish that it was faster than it is.

The dual-pixel autofocus is amazing. It’s fast, reliable and does a great job at tracking faces and moving subjects through the frame and is perfect for both photography and video. There is a built-in microphone but no external mic input, which is pretty disappointing for a $1300 camera. The articulating, or Vari-Angle, screen is also a fantastic feature that I think anyone shooting stills or video is going to appreciate.

It’s super small and portable and it a great option for photographers that don’t want a bulky and heavy camera with them. The size and particularly the weight are perfect YouTubers and vloggers who want to take the G1 X Mark II with them everywhere they go.

It’s crazy light but at the same time has nice build quality, a very secure grip and an excellent electronic viewfinder. You can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to easily move images from the camera to a mobile device but again, I’m disappointed at the lack of functionality using the Canon Camera Connect app.

Although it’s targeted at beginners, there are a ton of features and manual settings that more advanced users are going to appreciate. And finally we talked about in-lens image stabilization the timelapse mode that lets you easily get timelapse movies with just a couple of clicks. And remember to get an extra battery if you plan on using this camera for an entire day.

The G1 X Mark III sells right for $1299 I’ll put links in the description because there are always specials and discounts and the links will be automatically updated with the lowest pricing.

Speaking of, there is a $200 OFF special going on right now, so you’ll automatically receive it if you use the link in the description (for as long as it’s available).

I really hope I was able to give you a good overview of the Canon G1 X Mark III. If I did, please let me know by giving this video thumbs up, tweet it, share it, and if you haven’t yet, hit that subscribe and notification buttons.
