A beautiful book on Depression. This shed light to how someone with Depression feels and helped me understand Depression a lot better. 💙

A shocking stat is that Depression is one of the deadliest illnesses out there (since suicides usually stem from Depression), but the society takes Depression so lightly. Depression should be less stigmatised and I hope that more support goes to all sufferers out there.

An interesting point raised in the book is that usually Depression can be exacerbated by things being right. For instance, if you’re starving and homeless, it justifies why you’re Depressed. On the other hand, if you’re living the perfect life with healthy pay checks and a happy family, it feels even worse to be Depressed (since there is no reason to). This made me understand why so many celebrities leading the high life end up being Depressed.

A last memorable point was why Depressed people commit suicide. It’s not that they are not afraid of dying; nor they want to be happy. It’s just that life is too painful to live and they want to escape the pain. “Isn’t zero better than being negative?” This reminds me of the suicide notes left by Kpop idols; which totally resonated this point. 🥲

Notes on a Nervous Planet was my favourite read of 2019

Not sure about Reasons to Stay Alive - although it had some good points on there, for someone who has suffered from depression, the notes and feelings were all too familiar and I'm not sure that made me feel good. Those memories aren't good.

Book review for Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig

Synopsis: What does it mean to feel truly alive? This is the true story of how Matt Haig came through crisis, triumphed over a mental illness that almost destroyed him and learned to live again. Moving, funny and joyous, Reasons to Stay Alive is more than a memoir. It is a book about making the most of your time on earth.

WARNING! ⚠️ There may be spoilers in this review!

Having previously read The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, I was so excited to read Reasons to Stay Alive. Did it live up to all the expectations I had after reading The Midnight Library? Yes, and more! Such a well written book about the truths and horrors of mental health problems, and I particularly like that throughout the book, there are numbers of helplines and websites included throughout. I would recommend this book to anyone, whether you’ve ever experienced depression yourself, you know someone close with depression or whether you have no experience of it at all… you never know when something could happen or when you may be able to use the experiences in the book to help someone in daily life.

I would give Reasons to Stay Alive 5 out of 5 stars.
