Brightin Star 35mm F1.7 Vs 7artisans 35mm f0.95 on XH-2

Nov 12, 2022

I purchased the Brightin Star a couple weeks ago, since it was only $70 bucks Canadian. Im wondering if I should return it, and go for the 7 artisans lens instead? The f.095 lens obviously has a couple more stops of light, giving more background blur. But its also almost 4 times the money. I love the 50mm range in full frame, so this lens focal length is much desired for me. But in the f1.7 and up range, will I still get a better result from the Brightin Star, or will the 7artisans compete well there? Would either of these lenses resolve more than the other? I was thinking I could return the $70 lens and just get a Fuji f2 one for that range, but the f0.95 lens appeals to me for its aperture range.

The camera I will use it on is a XH-2, so there is that too. Anyone use either of these two lenses on their Fuji? How did they hold up?

I have the Mitakon 35mm F0.95 Mark II lens for my Fujis. It is on sale for $399 US dollars at B&H (usually $599, and I think it is worth it). Magical.

The legendary Fuji 35mm F1.4 gives you automatic aperture and autofocus, though. It is now selling for $599 and the 35mm F2 WR is selling for $399.

If you like clear and sharp all the way across the frame at all times, these Fujis are what you really want. If you like this with good bokeh, the 35mm F1.4 is the one to buy. The F2 might not give you great bokeh, but actual users will have to comment about this.

Let us not forget the Fuji 35mm F2 XC lens at $199. You get the same optics as the 35mm F2 WR lens, along with autofocus and automatic aperture. You just have to deal with a plastic lens mount and no weather resistance. DPR liked it a lot.

I haven't tried any of the Fujis.

Sorry I don't know anything about the 7artisans 35mm F0.95, but it is selling for $249.

I have a 7artisans 55mm F1.4 Mark II lens and it is excellent ($126), beyond all my expectations, a real gem. The original (Mark I) was not reviewed well but I never tried it.

7artisans also have a 35mm F1.2 Mark II lens selling for $139. If I were doing this again, I would give this one a try. Not the original, though. Be sure it is the Mark II. Of course, if you "settle" for this you will always wonder about the F0.95...

I was thinking of getting the new Fuji 30mm macro that was just released and maybe this 7artisans lens for the bokeh monster. I ended up setting up the return on the Brightin Star lens, so its going back.

I also have the Mitakon 35mm as Tom. It is my favorite on Fujifilm. I have owned the Fujifilm 35mm 1.4 and Fujifilm f2. I have also been able to borrow the 7Artisans 1.2, Fujifilm 33mm 1.4, and 7Artisans 0.95.

The 7Artisans 0.95 is very close to the Mitakon except for the bokeh and breathing. The Mitakon has less breathing and the bokeh is smoother and without outlining in the bokeh balls. Subtle but noticeable for me. The 7Artisans is a bit cheaper though but I got mine 2nd hand and in practically brand new condition. Very little fringing on my copy too so I got really lucky.

As for getting the new Fuji macro, in my opinion, I think it would be better if you just purchase macro extension tubes and connect your 7Artisans lens. Unless you really need autofocus and shoot macros all the time, I don't see the point in a dedicated macro lens.

I want the macro mostly for copying film on a stand and autofocus would help make sure its tack sharp. I can use the macro for outdoor shots too. The Fuji macro would also be recommended for the XH-2. They said the 7artisans isn't as sharp as the Fujis.

If that's mostly the intended use then the new Fujifilm macro might be the best for you.

As for the wide aperture 35mm options, there are 3 primary manual focus options — 7Artisans, Mitakon, Laowa. Cheapest to most expensive and optically good to best in that order too.
