GUITAR WORLD's 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists Of All Time - Jan. 23, 2004

The March 2004 issue of Guitar World magazine includes a list of the 100 greatest heavy metal guitarists as selected by the magazine's staff. "This is not a list that ranks who can play the fastest or with the most taste, feeling or technique (although many players on our list have all of those arrows in their quiver)," the editors stress in the accompanying introduction. "It is, rather, a tribute to the great men who shit iron and piss stainless steel razor blades, and do it every time they plug into an amplifier."

Believe it or not, all three actors played on both albums and wrote most of, if not all of their own music. They also did the music when they were their alter ego folk band.

Wow, I never knew that Guest, McKean and Shearer were really musically inclined. I had heard some Spinal Tap songs on the radio and saw the movie, but I never bought the albums. How were the musicians credited inside the albums? I had figured that if it said Tufnel, St. Hubbins and Smalls played their instruments, I might have questioned that. Hmmm, doesn't that sound all too familiar? :-)

So which one of their many drummers played on those albums? :-D

I've got their second album, "Break Like The Wind."

The credits read as follows: David St. Hubbins - guitar/vocals Nigel Tufnel - Lead guitar/vocals Derek Smalls - bass/vocals Caucasian Jeffery Vanston - keyboards Ric Shrimpton - drums (fairly certain that he was credited as Mick Shrimpton on the fist album but listed differently to keep up with their mutliple drummer stories)

Later in the credits it lists each actor's name next to his "Spinal Tap Name." Also, every song on the album was written by the three actors.

They also used a few guest musicians on the album and credited them as well.

I don't remember a full tour, but I remember them performing at the Freddie Mercury tribute at Wembley in '92.

Around that time, they did do a full tour. I remember them playing my area. I also remember them doing an appearance on the old Aresenio show.

For trivia's sake: Nigel Tufnel is also credited as guitarist on the 1977 sitcom-rock album by "Lenny and the Squigtones" (Mike McKean and David Lander from "Laverne and Shirley") five years before the Spinal Tap movie came out. There's a photo of Guest and the rest of the band included, but he's outfitted in an early Beatles suit, nothing like the Tap guitarist's typical appearance. Either he or McKean lets loose with some inappropriate metal leads on a song or two for comic relief.

A kilt-wearing Nigel also appeared on David Letterman's show duelling with Les Paul in the early 1990s while promoting the "Return of Spinal Tap" video release. I'm no guitarist myself, but most of my musician friends that watch the tape are deeply ashamed of Guest for his sheer gall as well as his actual performance.
